WACO, TX — It's been three years since Brittney Garrett fell 60 feet into Lake Waco after her truck hit the guard rail on the Twin Bridges on Highway 6.
"It's a miracle that I'm alive," Garret said. "Every year I'm getting stronger it's um, it's different."
Surviving what could have been a deadly crash, Garrett still can't believe the night of March 24, 2016 happened three years ago. She hopes by telling her story of survival it will get others to stay off their phone while driving.
Right before she crashed into the rail, a text came through her phone, she looked down to see who it was. The next thing she remembers is coming up out of the water.
"My accident happened just after midnight, when I was able to get someone to call 911 it was just after 2:30 a.m.," Garrett said. "It was 32 degrees."
Three years later, Garrett still suffers from PTSD when she drives in the rain. It took Garrett nearly a month to be able to drive down those bridges again. She said it was a challenge she had to overcome.
"I don't think anything is easy," Garrett said. "The best way and the way I handled it was I just drove across the Twin Bridges and just took it on head on."
Everyone is shocked she's still alive after what happened and Garrett tells her story to anyone who will listen.
"Anyone can talk to me. If you know someone who can't stay off their phone while driving, I'll tell them my story," Garrett said.
A hard habit for some to break, staying off their phone while driving. Garrett masters the itch to look at her phone by using a "Do Not Disturb" option. It's activated when she is driving and notifications aren't able to come through until she is out from behind the wheel.
"It takes a split second and you, you're life's over. it's not worth it," Garrett said.
