WACO, TX — Waco police are informing the public of a scam going on in the area.
Police said the new scam is targeting churchgoing people. The scammers are reported to be saying they are affiliated with several local churches.
Most of the churches have been in the Hispanic or catholic community.
The scammer has been calling as the preacher or pastor of the church and asking the parishioner to buy gift cards. They are then instructed to send photographs of the gift cards or the card information to the phone number that the pastor is calling from.
The scammer has some information about the potential victim and some information about the church that the person attends.
Once the victim provides the card information or photos, the scammer is able to withdraw the money from those accounts.
Most often the number the scammer is calling from is not traceable.
Waco police are asking the public to be aware of the scam.
