WACO, TX — The Waco Police Department welcomed 12 new officers to its police force on Thursday.

The 12 officers have been attending the McLennan County Community College's Law Enforcement Academy for the past six months. They will now begin six more months of training, including four months of field training before they allowed out on their own.

This news comes as many cities in Central Texas experience a shortage of qualified officers in their departments. To become a police officer, you must be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma or G.E.D. with some additional requirements made by department.
