WACO, TX — Waco Police Department detectives are currently investigating more than 100 cases of catalytic converter theft.

Authorities say catalytic converter theft is the current trend of criminals and cases are growing by the day.

Suspects are able to quickly crawl under a vehicle and cut the converter off in little to no time before anyone is able to notice.

Waco PD has released these tips to protect your vehicle:

  • Park in well lit areas.
  • If possible, park your vehicle near security cameras or close to the front of a store.
  • Install motion-sensing lights in your driveway.
  • Install either a protective plate that covers your catalytic converter or a protection device to keep these thieves from making you their next victim.
  • Etch your vehicle's VIN number or license plate number on your catalytic converter. If it is stolen, it can be identified as yours and returned back to you. This also helps authorities track them back to the crime and makes it easier to identify the thieves.

Victims of catalytic converter theft are asked to report it to their local police department so officers can properly document the crime.
