Waco ISD administration and teachers took time to recognize the district's teachers of the year today.

Charity Lee, a teacher at University High School, and Cassandra Benjamin, a teacher at West Avenue Elementary, were awarded the Virginia DuPuy First Year Teacher of the Year awards.

One elementary teacher and one secondary teacher are chosen each year for the award.

While their first year in teaching has been different for all teachers, they are grateful for the recognition.

"I think lately being at home and not being able to see them and talk to them, you haven't felt that kind of validation of I'm doing something good, it's worthwhile, the kids are learning. It's been harder lately to get that feedback from kids. It means a lot especially right now," Charity Lee, Virginia DuPuy First Year Teacher of the Year.

"It was a long journey and I'm just glad to be here and have a supportive staff here at WesAvenue and Waco I-S-D to trust in me as a first year teacher," said Cassandra Benjamin, Virginia DuPuy First Year Teacher of the Year.

The Virginia DuPuy First Year Teacher of the Year award is named after the former Waco mayor who advocates for public education.
