WACO, TX — Students at one Waco elementary school will soon have a safer stroll to class.
City leaders secured a federal grant of over $7,000 for the area of J.H. Hines Elementary to upgrade sidewalks.
Last month, the Texas Transportation Commission announced the school was selected for funding, making Waco one of a dozen cities to receive the grant.
"What we see is there's not a lot of walkers but potentially, there are a lot of walkers, so we believe that putting in safe infrastructure will encourage them to walk to school. We learned from education that kids that walk to school usually are good learners at the very first part of the day," said Jim Reed, Waco Capital Programs Manager.
Construction is set to begin in 10 months.
