WACO, TX — A pizza delivery driver's vehicle was stolen while she was dropping off food at the door Saturday night.

Authorities say it happened around 9:50 p.m. on February 6 while the driver was on Maple Avenue.

“I know with delivery drivers, a lot of times, it can be the same thing. They step out of the car for just a moment to walk up to a front door, and it’s just convenient to leave the car running and come right back to it because they don’t expect to be gone long,” said Waco PD Public Information Officer Garen Bynum

A neighbor across the street captured the incident on video and submitted the footage to police.

“A lot of times, the people that do these type of crimes are younger. Like a younger generation, late teens, early twenties," said Officer Bynum. "So we did in the summer see a little bit of an uptick because kids are not in school.”

Officer Bynum says the best way to prevent vehicle theft is by eliminating opportunities for thieves, such as parking in a well-lit area, locking your car, and avoiding leaving a spare set of keys in the glove box.

“A lot of times we have found that people have maybe been a victim of burglary, and during the burglary these criminals will locate a hide-a-key," Officer Bynum explained. "A lot of these are crimes of opportunity, so if we take away these opportunities from these criminals, it will help you out and help us out.”

If an incident happens to you, do not wait. Officer Bynum advises citizens to call police as soon as possible so they can begin investigating and get your vehicle returned to you.
