One arrested after striking Waco officer with car, evading arrest

WACO, TX — On Saturday, December 19, 2020, shortly after 2 am, Waco Police officers received a call in the 2500 blk of S. 27th St. of a disturbance where a man was kicking his cousin’s vehicle.

As officers arrived at the scene, they were notified that the man that was causing the disturbance was sitting in a vehicle near the dispatched location. As officers approached the vehicle, the suspect fled the scene.

Officers ordered the man to stop, but the suspect refused to comply with orders and began to accelerate. As he was fleeing, the man accelerated towards the officers and struck one of the officers with his driver’s side mirror, striking our officer in the elbow. After this, the officers ran to their vehicle as the suspect continued to flee.

The officers lost sight of him after he evaded them, so the officers began to search the area for the suspect in a now Aggravated Assault against an officer.

After a brief search of the area, officers located the suspect’s vehicle near S. 12th St. and Primrose after the suspect wrecked the vehicle. The suspect was also located and taken into custody near the crash site.

The suspect, in this case, has been identified as 25-year-old Joe Clakely. Clakely was taken to the McLennan County Jail, where he was charged with Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, Evading Arrest with a Vehicle, and Criminal Mischief.

The officer in this case did not receive any serious injuries and was able to be apart of taking her assailant into custody.
