WOODWAY, TX — Eleven million students from across the world began a journey to make it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Just under 600 spellers will be participating in Washington D.C. next week.
As one of the oldest and most iconic competitions, the spelling bee is back for its 90th year.
For the second year in a row, a Midway Middle School student will be put to the test under the national spotlight.
Seventh-grader Sarah Khoury will be competing in her third spelling bee. With her experience, she has confidence to fulfill her expectations.
"This year I'm hoping maybe I'll get a somewhat easy word, and if it's not an easy word, I'm hoping that I'll be able to figure it out easily, but I do have a lot of confidence in myself, that I can at least make it to semifinals this year," said Khoury.
Preliminary rounds begin May 28-29, and the final rounds begin on May 30.
