Meals on Wheels looking out for the elderly during heatwaves

WACO, TX — When the summer weather creeps into the triple digits, its Meal on Wheels keeping an eye on the community's elderly.

Long time volunteer David Gonzales makes sure all the people on his biweekly route know he cares.

"The whole point is helping people. It warms my heart. These are our friends, and they truly truly are, and it is a worth while endeavor. I mean it feeds me. It feeds us spiritually, and then it gives them a warm meal and we get to visit with them," said Gonzales.

Explaining of his years with Meal on Wheels, change has come through caring for people's needs and listening to the elderly he visits.

"Like little Ms. Costley bringing up her door. The program really doesn't help with that but maybe I know someone who knows someone and they get a ramp," Gonzales said pointing towards a ramp at a wheelchair-bound home he stops at.

Officials at Meals on Wheels Waco explained to Central Texas News Now that the organization is in despite need of box fans, saying they have an entire log of people who have requested one. They are running a drive called 'Help Our Senior Beat The Heat' where anyone who can is invited to bring a box fan to 501 W. Waco Drive.
