Man in prison indicted for strangulation of Waco woman killed in 2004 - thanks to DNA

WACO, TX — A Texas prison inmate that was serving time for killing his brother-in-law has been indicted for the murder of Pamela Moore.

Moore was found dead along Old Mexia Rd in January of 2004. She died from strangulation. Moore was 40 years old.

Deputies were able to identify Gilberto Ortiz as a suspect thanks to DNA evidence. He was indicted on a murder charge. Ortiz is 55 years old.

Sheriff's deputies said that Ortiz was known to be working in the Waco area at the time of the murder.

Ortiz went to prison in 1995 for the death of his brother-in-law in Harris County, but deputies said he was out on parole during the time Moore was killed.

Currently, Ortiz is elgible from parole, and his release date from prison is August of 2025. He is currently at the Fort Stockton prison unit.

This is just the latest cold case with an arrest McLennan County Cold Case Unit. The unit also made in arrest in the Beth Bramlett murder case and the Vera Burleson murder case.
