WACO, TX — The community has been rallying behind a coach that will not be returning to Rapoport Academy in the fall.
At Rapoport Academy, students and educators receive a letter each year inviting them to join the school again in the next school year. This year, Michael Mitchell did not receive this letter.
Mitchell has been with Rapoport Academy since 2015 and was the girls' basketball coach. Once his students heard the news, they began to voice their disagreement with the decision.
President of the School Board Josh Tetens said students have shown a fantastic demonstration of support for Mitchell. In a public forum held on March 19, Mitchell spoke about his accomplishments and his dedication to the students of the school. Tetens said the community rallied behind him during this time.
Tetens said that the board is responsible for budgets and other issues at the school. He said the superintendent is in charge of employees.
Occasionally, the board will step in and hear from employees if they have grievances. Tetens said that to his knowledge, Mitchell has not filed a grievance.
Tetens also said that Mitchell has not been terminated and that there was no specific event that lead to him not being invited to the 2019-2020 year.
