Clues arise in the death of a teenager found shot behind a cemetery

WACO, TX — Two weeks have passed since the body of 17-year-old Aqurius McPhaul was found shot and lying outside of a cemetery near Baylor University's Campus.

Since his finding, few updates or clues have materialized.

Found laying in the middle of 4th Street behind the Oakwood Cemetery on September 14, the McPhaul family is seeking answers in connection to their son's death.

"If someone was to do the right thing and gave the proper authorities the key piece that they're missing to the puzzle...it would be a tremendous thing to our family," explained Sherman McPhaul, Aqurius's Father.

25 News reached out to Waco ISD, who confirmed McPhaul attended each class in which he was enrolled on September 14, and departed the campus at the end of the school day, between 1:30 and 2 p.m.

It was approximately 3:10 p.m. when a Baylor University employee spotted McPhaul's body.

25 News spoke with the Oakwood Cemetery, who said they did have employees in the vicinity at the time. When asked if those employees heard any gunshots, the associate with the cemetery explained during this time of year, dove season, it is normal to hear gunfire, due to the grounds vicinity to vacant lots.

Waco Police Department explained to 25 News that the case is open and currently being investigated.

When asked to define the definition of a cold case, authorizes explained that cold cases are not defined by a specific time period. Instead cold cases are defined by their lost leads over time, and are not investigated daily.

"It's very frustrating but we are a praying faithful family that know that God is going to seek justice for us," explained the McPhaul family. "On Saturday we laid him to rest and there were 500 people at his home going celebration and out of that 500 people we believe in our heart, somebody heard, somebody knows something, anything big or small, just tell, talk."

When asked what he would say to the person or persons responsible for his son's death, Seherman McPhaul said, "I would say, I forgive you, I would say I don't know the circumstances but please turn yourself in."
