WACO, TX — Carlos Colón is an Assistant Chaplain at Baylor University. He also has composed many musical pieces in his time, recently dedicating his last to Cameron Park.

Colón has always loved visiting Cameron Park alone and with family. He's enjoyed the peaceful trails, meeting new people and the wonderful sights and sounds you see there every day. A tune popped into his head while at the park and many months later, a 6 set suite was made.

"Cameron park has a deep connection to Waco and McLennan County, and in that regard, the piece celebrates Cameron Park and the community," Colón said.

He highlights the some of the more popular, but also some unknown places, in the massive park. Some include the river walk next to the Brazos River, Miss Nellie's Pretty Place, Jacob's Ladder and the trail Heaven's Declaration.

"In Spanish, Brazos De Dios means the arms of God. So it's a reference to a Bible text where god says, 'Have I not carried you in my everlasting arms," Colón said.

Although he was the mastermind behind composing the piece, Colón had friends help create and edit the suite. Colón says working with friends was one of the best parts when writing. Although he's already played the piece once, he says there is still some editing to be done before playing it for the public once more.

Colón received positive feedback during his first performance, and he sees his suite becoming just as timeless as the park.

"It was just refreshing, just a good feeling that we had created something beautiful that people would enjoy and had ties to our community," Colón said.
