WACO, TX — About 300 hundred students from Waco ISD’s ATLAS Academy participated in the school’s inaugural day of service.
Eighth graders from the school helped in the community at Caritas, World Hunger Relief, Shepard’s Heart Food Pantry, and the Family Abuse Center. Sixth and seventh grade students participated in service projects on campus for Pack of Hope, the Ronald McDonald House, and Caritas.
“I feel like in order for the students to be well-rounded, they really need to connect with the community they live in, and community service is vital to our students. I just think that they need to know what goes on behind the scenes, and how many people are in need in our community," said Kathleen Knight, Dean of the ATLAS Academy.
The ATLAS Academy plans on making this an annual event during the same week of the Martin Luther King, Jr holiday in honor of Dr. King and his vision of community.
The ATLAS Academy teaches gifted and talented students within Waco ISD.
