Several Central Texas libraries, including Hewitt, Waco and Temple, are offering reading programs this summer.
The Waco-McLennan County Public Library is hosting 200 free activities during the months of June and July. Musicians, wildlife animal experts and scientists will visit the library and do interactive presentations.
"We want to make a sure there is a place for our local families to go for our local families for our free activities to keep them busy. There are fun activities. There is an educational component to them but mostly we want people to come together, spend time as a family and experience the library," said Jessica Emmett, Waco-McLennan County Library Community services supervisor.
They will also have summer reading clubs for children, teens and adults that run from June 1 through July 31.
"It prevents that summer slide over the summer so they don't lose their learning they got during the school year. There are a lot of studies that show that kids who read over the summer actually gain ground and kids who don't read during the summer come back to school really behind," Emmett said.
This summer, the library is using an app called Read Squared for folks to track their reading progress.
There are hands-on activities at the library, including using building blocks like Legos, making slime, crafting and doing yoga.
People who participate in the reading clubs, there are prizes for those who read a certain amount of books.
