COLLEGE STATION, TX — College Station is looking to offer new recycling options, and is hoping to keep those green practices as cheap as possible.
The City already offers recycling collection services to residential areas but does not currently offer those services to businesses and apartments.
"We see quite a bit of cardboard, and everyone assumes that cardboard can be recycled, but if you have any type of food particles or residue, greasy pizza boxes, then it becomes contaminant and we can't actually recycle it," said Caroline Ask, Environmental Compliance & Recycling Manager of College Station.
The City's study found centralized recycling at apartment complexes leads to contaminated waste, which is no longer recyclable. Door-to-door collections were determined to be the only effective way to recycle in apartment-style living, and the City is working to overcome that hurdle to move forward and stay green.
