COLLEGE STATION, TX — The College Station City Council has approved an ordinance that will require any operator of a vehicle or bicycle to be hands free unless at a complete stop.

Texas state law prohibits reading or writing electronic messages unless at a complete stop since 2017 when Gov. Abbott signed House Bill 62.

The College Station ordinance will require any operator of a motor vehicle or a bicycle on public roadway or highway to be completely hands free unless at a complete stop.

The fine amount ranges from $25-$500.

The city ordinance states "mounted gps use" is an accepted defense.

City Council says the cost to purchase and install signs at every entrance to the city will be $84,000.
