BELTON, TX — Two Belton families were inspired to create a safe space for kids to sit during recess after a classroom assignment.

Belton ISD says student's read "The Buddy Bench" by B.D. Cottleston as a classroom assignment.

In the children's book, a young student finds himself braving recess alone until he finds a friend on the school's Buddy Bench. The Buddy or Friendship Bench is a special place in a school playground where a child can sit if they want someone to talk to or play with. Seeing a child on The Buddy Bench is a signal to other kids to ask them to play.

Two Tarver Elementary families decided to create their own buddy benches for Tarver's playground.

"When a child sits on the bench, it's a signal to peers to ask him or her to play," said Principal Aubrey Itz. "These benches are a great example of how our school community is looking out for everyone."
