KILLEEN, TX - The United Way of Central Texas gave away hundreds of books to several students from Temple.

Cater Elementary students can now flip through the pages of more than 500 free books and take them home.

Staff with United Way say they received a learning loss mini-grant to help fund their literacy initiative to buy books for local students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Literacy truly is a foundation of education,” said Cater Elementary's Ashleigh McCarver. “If we don’t learn how to read then we can’t read to learn. Community health and community connection, especially in times like this, can make the best things happen.”

Staff with the United Way of Central Texas say they’re still looking to find ways to get more funding so they can give even more books to local students.
