COPPERAS COVE, TX — Many students rely on school lunch during the school year.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 12 million children in the United States live in "food insecure" homes.

Central Texas school districts and organizations have partnered up to do what they can to make sure these kids do not go unfed during the summer.

At the May school board meeting, the Copperas Cove ISD school board approved their summer feeding sites where they will serve more than 20,000 meals this summer.

One of those sites is the ASYMCA in Copperas Cove.

"We have here at the Armed Services YMCA, we offer free lunch and breakfast program. Zero to 18 [years old] is free and then adults pay $4 for lunch $2 for breakfast if they want to have the breakfast with their children," said Markeshia Anderson, the site coordinator with the ASYMCA.

The ASYMCA Cove Camp location serves those summer meals to families with kids in their summer camp and at the ASYMCA Killeen Copperas Cove Family Center, located at 501 Clara Drive.

Any child in the community is invited to receive a free lunch.

The summer food program is provided to the community as a whole only at their Cove Family Center.

Other ASYMCA locations that offer breakfast and lunch to summer campers and their families are Bellaire, Brookhaven, Southwest and Willow Springs.

In addition, there are many more free summer meal programs that are offered all across Central Texas.

Kids can eat free all summer at specific Killeen ISD campuses, certain Boys and Girls Club locations and Fort Hood Youth Centers.

If you visit their website, you'll find a summer feeding interactive map where you can find even more options.
