KILLEEN, TX — The cold snap has brought in an influx of clients to the Friends in Crisis homeless shelter.
“We had 88 last night. We already have 91 tonight and it's only 5 o'clock,” said Larry Moehnke, Vice President of Families in Crisis.
The Killeen shelter has 78 beds, but cots for when there is an increase in clients. They always aim to make room for more.
“We ran over to our domestic violence shelter to pick up some more cots," said Moehnke.
The distressing reality is that on any given night more than 550,000 people will experience homelessness in the United States.
“I'm very appreciative, and the services here are very good,” said Freddie Curry, who is staying at Friends in Crisis during the frigid nights.
“They take care of you. They give you what you're supposed to have, whatever you need. If it's here, you got it,” said Curry.
However, his stay is short. Curry received housing, and will be able to move in on Friday. It’s all apart of a program through the organization that assists people who have an income to make ends meet until they get back on their feet.
Curry expressed his gratitude for those who support the shelter.
“As you know we had to close for a few months for a period of time, but the community stepped up and helped us. That is needed,” said Moehnke.

“Only way you're going to get your blessings is to give it back,” said Curry.
