Police said they received a call at 7:17 p.m. about shots fired; it was then upgraded to an active shooter situation.
"We do have one injured and the victim has been airlifted to Baylor Scott and White with unknown injuries," Killeen police said in a Facebook statement.
"The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect seen in these photos entered the mall and walked into one of the businesses," said police in a release on Wednesday. "He approached the counter and discharged a black handgun, wounding one male."
Police Chief Charles Kimble confirmed the victim was conscious and breathing when he left in the helicopter.
A witness told 25 News they heard six shots inside the mall.
"I will never go to the Killeen Mall again," said Rachael Brown, another witness. "I don't know why they don't shut that place down."
Police evacuated the mall and urged those who needed to pick someone up to do so from the west side of the mall off of S. WS Young Drive.
Chief Kimble said other shoppers sheltered in place inside the mall.
Anyone on the scene who saw the suspect around 7 p.m. is asked to call the Killeen Police Department at (254) 501-8830.
