KILLEEN, TX — One driver was ticketed for failing to stop for a school bus during the Killeen Police Department's traffic detail.

The department partnered with Killeen ISD to conduct the traffic enforcement detail after receiving several complaints of drivers failing to stop for school buses.

“We put an officer on a bus and have them call out violators and we have other officers parallel to the bus route so they’re able to stop and enforce,” said Lt. Robert Rush, Killeen Police Department.

During the detail, an officer rode on a school bus and notified other officers in the area of violations. Those officers then strictly enforced laws related to the failure to stop for school buses.

“The number is extremely high and it shouldn’t be this high. Everybody knows that when you see a bus to load and unload children you need to just stop and wait,” said Deejay Jennings, Senior Operations Specialist, KISD.

The detail took place on a bus route in the northeast area of Killeen from about 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 12. One driver was stopped and a citation was issued.

The department says failing to stop for a school bus that is picking up and dropping off students is not only a violation of state law (TRC 545066), it is also a serious safety concern.

Killeen PD says they intend to expand the detail to other parts of the city in the near future, and will announce other dates as appropriate.
