BELTON, TX — As the passionate debate continues across the nation calling for Confederate monuments, statues and flags to be removed, the discussion led to a public hearing between roughly 200 concerned citizens in Bell County on Wednesday.

In a public discussion, a number of people took a stand in Bell County. Some rallied for a Confederate monument in Belton to be removed or relocated, while others begged for it to stay.

The Confederate statue has stood on the Historic Courthouse lawn in Belton for more than a century. After a number of calls, emails and personal visits, its existence was up for an official discussion during a public meeting with the Bell County Commissioners Court.

The commissioners court must now decide if the Confederate monument discussion will make it on the agenda of a future meeting.

People have rallied for the monument to be removed or relocated in the past. However, the county has never acted.
