KILLEEN, Texas — The Killeen ISD Board of Trustees has voted to name one of its newest elementary school after an educator who was killed in the Luby's Cafeteria massacre.

Elementary school #36, which is located on Azura Drive, will now become Pat Carney Elementary School.

Patricia "Pat" Brann Kemp Carney served the district for over 27 years. She was a teacher at Peebles and East Ward Elementary Schools before being promoted to Assistant Principal and Principal of East Ward Elementary School. Carney then went on to become the Elementary Curriculum Director for KISD.

Carney was one of 23 people who were killed during a mass shooting at a Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen on October 16, 1991.

KISD says the new campus is part of the 2018 bond and will relieve overcrowding at Fowler Elementary.
