KILLEEN, TX — With the holidays quickly approaching, giving season is in full swing.
According to data from Giving USA, more than $400 billion was donated to non-profit organizations in 2018, so 25 News asked around to see how much of that pie local non-profits receive and what their projections are for this year.
"Right now, even though it's already November and we like to wrap up the official part of our campaign in November, we are probably at about 40% pledged, but we know that our biggest accounts, which are some of the educational organizations and municipalities have just started, so we are optimistic. We are going to meet our goal and hit our target for fundraising,” said Aaron Montemayor, Executive Director for United Way Greater Fort Hood Area.
According to Giving USA, $427.7 billion were donated in 2018, which is 0.7% higher than 2017, but of those funds, local organizations like Greater Fort Hood Area United Way don't see much of it.
"Of the $400 billion, our share so far is about a half million dollars,” Montemayor said. "The biggest numbers are probably in the major metro areas and the bigger cities.”
The billions of dollars are split between nine categories of non-profits. The top three include religion, education and human services, making up more than $234 billion combined.
Of those who donated in 2018, individuals gave over $290 billion. Corporations totaled $20.5 billion in donations, and foundations gave $75.8 billion in 2018.
