(KXXV) — From soldiers to firemen... to police officers, on March 18 each year people take the time to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of others.

It's National Supreme Sacrifice Day and for people like the staff at the Central Texas state Veterans Cemetery, the nationally-recognized day hits home.

"The biggest thing here is that once the veteran enters the cemetery and he enters his last formation, last formation is what we call when the headstone, all the headstones out there, we call it the last formation. So, we insure that the area is just they get an honorable and dignified burial honored and dignified honors," said Douglas Gault, on-site representative for the Veterans Land Board.

Another way the cemetery honors those who have made the ultimate sacrifice is by hosting funerals for veterans laid to rest with no family members present.

The next unaccompanied veterans funeral is set to take place Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
