A subject has been taken into custody after a "major call" regarding shots fired led to two schools being placed on lockdown as well as residents being told to shelter in place.

The Killeen Police Department says the incident began as a domestic dispute. At some time, a subject took a shot at equipment police had set up.

The subject was taken into custody around 5 p.m.

Officers closed the following streets during the incident and are working to reopen them:

  • Traditions Lane at Founders Trail
  • Inspiration Drive at Founders Trail
  • Traditions Lane at Gary Purser Blvd
  • Inspiration Drive at Gary Purser Blvd.

Haynes Elementary School and Smith Middle School were placed on lockdown. Police say they have contacted the schools and are working with Killeen ISD to lift the lockdown.

The district says parents will be alerted when students are dismissed and buses will run their routes at that time.
