KILLEEN, TX — The Killeen Independent School District is using a 38-foot-long bus to educate elementary school students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
In 2018, the district says they received a five-year $1 million "STEM in Motion" Department of Defense Education Activity grant to help buy, outfit and staff the bus.
The 38-foot-long bus is customized with modern furniture, a 60-inch smart television, 30 laptops and iPads, and a range of science and technology supplies. The bus is staffed with a full-time teacher and a driver/ assistant.
The goal of the bus is to provide a STEM education to third through fifth-graders at 26 Killeen ISD campuses that have 15% or greater military-connected students.
Killeen ISD says the bus will impact approximately 8,730 students.
