KILLEEN, TX — The Killeen Independent School District has added its first K9 officer to its police force.
K9 Sauron is a 2-year-old German Shepherd who was born in the Netherlands and is trained in narcotics detection.
KISD says Sauron and his trainer, Officer Richard Jouett, spent several weeks undergoing extensive training to learn to work together as a team and detect five different kinds of narcotics. The team is required to attend weekly training to maintain certification.
The K9 team will regularly visit campuses to educate and demonstrate their abilities to students. They will also provide patrol support for athletic and special district events.
K9 Sauron will live with Officer Jouett full time and patrol campuses in a rotation across the district.
