The Killeen City Council is moving forward with plans to renovate or rebuild the Bob Gilmore Senior Center.
In February, the senior center was forced to close because the building was deemed unsafe.
However, after months of debate, city council members are taking action.
On Tuesday, the council approved the selection of Dallas-based Randall Scott’s Architects to conduct a needs assessment to determine whether the building is worth saving.
According to Killlen Mayor Pro Tem Jim Kilpatrick, “We’d like to have a separate structure.”
Since the Bob Gilmore Senior Center has been closed, seniors have been forced to share neighboring Killeen Community Center with teens and other youth groups.
Kilpatrick says there is still plenty of time for debate before a final decision is made.
“We’ll have several public meetings that will be announced well in advance, so people have to make it out," Kilpatrick said.
