CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea — A Fort Hood soldier was found dead in Army barracks in South Korea Monday.
According to U.S. Forces Korea officials, 28-year-old Staff Sergeant Nicholas M. Scalzo was found unresponsive in his barracks room at Camp Hovey.
Staff Sergeant Scalzo was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
Staff Sergeant Scalzo was from Selma, Oregon, and joined the Army in July 2012. He was an artilleryman assigned to the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood.
The 3rd Army Brigade Combat Team deployed to the Korean Peninsula in July 2019 as the current rotational brigade training under the 2nd Infantry Division.
Grigade Commander Colonel Kevin Capra said he and Command Sergeant Major Ryan McLane would like to send their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Staff Sergeant Scalzo.
“Command Sgt. Maj. Ryan McLane and I would like to send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Staff Sgt. Nicholas Scalzo. Nicholas was an integral member of the Steel Dragon and Greywolf teams and we are all deeply saddened by the loss.”
Staff Sergeant Scalzo's cause of death is under investigation.
