District steering committee recommends 8 new projects, including building 4 new elementary schools

KILLEEN, TX — The Killeen ISD Bond Steering Committee has recommended eight projects for the Board of Trustees to prioritize ahead of next year's elections.

The group is made of more than 65 members and is compromised of parents, community members and stakeholders.

The group prioritized projects they foresee are needed to accommodate the growth of the district. According to the district, 94% of members voted to proceed with a bond recommendation to the Board of Trustees for the May 2, 2020 election.

The committee voted on eight projects totaling $265 million. The bonds would be separated into propositions in coordination with Senate Bill 30.

The approved projects include:

  • New Elementary School #37
  • New Elementary School #38
  • New Harker Heights Elementary School
  • New Peebles Elementary School
  • Renovations to Ellison High School
  • Stadium renovations to Shoemaker, Ellison and Harker Heights High School

The district says Superintendent Dr. John Craft will recommend the district pay for Elementary School #39 and Middle School #15 out of the Strategic Facility Plan fund.

The steering committee chairs will present the final recommendations to the Board of Trustees at the January 14, 2020 meeting.
