KILLEEN, Texas — With the school year in full swing, distracted driving and careless drivers are posing a safety risk to children and causing reactions from crossing guards throughout Central Texas.

Deborah, a crossing guard in Killeen who wishes to remain anonymous, said that there are a growing number of distracted drivers passing through her crosswalk.

"They don't want to stop," said Deborah.

According to Deborah, some drivers even choose to ignore her stop sign outright and drive passed her when she is helping a student cross the street.

"I'm holding the sign up, and I'm telling him to stop," she said.

In addition to being dangerous, ignoring crossing guard stop signs is illegal and can carry a fine of up to $1,000.

Deborah said that she just hopes people think first before they put people's lives at risk.

"Just imagine if it was your child crossing the street," said Deborah.
