BELTON, TX — Southbound I-35 is back open after an 18-wheeler crashed into a fire truck, tow truck and car it was pulling early Tuesday morning in Belton.
The incident occurred at 2:28 a.m. near the I-14 overpass on southbound I-35.
"Belton firefighters were assisting at an accident when an 18-wheeler hit the fire truck and the wrecker," said Belton spokesperson Paul Romer.
The fire truck was on the scene of an accident blocking lanes for an earlier wreck when the 18-wheeler struck the fire engine, a tow truck and a car it was pulling. Officials say firefighters were in the engine when it was hit.
Three firefighters suffered minor injuries. They were transported to Scott & White Hospital as a precaution.
The crash also caused a diesel spill after a large piece of debris from the crash landed on northbound I-35 and was struck by another 18-wheeler. A northbound lane was also temporarily closed for the spill to be cleaned up.
There is significant damage to the fire engine, which had to be towed from the scene.
After the incident, the Temple Fire Department assisted helped with backup coverage in Belton.
