KILLEEN, TX — Each year, Families in Crisis, Inc. hosts a Thanksgiving dinner for victims of domestic violence and homelessness in Killeen.
This year they had a record turnout, and shelter officials said the community stepped up to make sure no one went hungry.
On an average Thanksgiving night, the Families in Crisis domestic shelter team feeds around 30 people. This Thanksgiving that number doubled.
The domestic shelter served more than 60 clients, and so did the non-profit's homeless shelter.
Shelter workers said early that afternoon the food supply was low.
"At one o'clock there was only one donation of food at that time at Familes in Crisis," said Director of Operations William Hall.
As word spread throughout the area, community members started stepping up.
"And overwhelmingly, they supported us and brought food to us," Hall continued.
He said the need does not stop there.
With Christmas just around the corner, in addition to toys for younger children, there is a greater need for gifts for older children.
