BELTON, TX — Temple Fire and Rescue said significant water is being released from the Belton Dam.

They said it created the perfect opportunity for firefighters to conduct lifesaving training.

"Here recently with the more rain we've had, we have had more rescues. I think we've averaged at least two to three a year. Most recent one for Temple was about a month ago," said Caleb Inman, a firefighter with Temple Fire and Rescue.

Fire crews from Waco, Temple, Killeen and Fort Hood joined together for a three-day swift water training.

Firefighters shared that when it comes to real life rescue scenarios, training is essential and helps keep everyone on the same page.

"It just takes a huge amount of personnel to make this happen. If you exhausted every personnel from one city, you would leave the city uncovered," said Battalion Chief Phillip Bannister, with the Killeen Fire Department.

The training included rescuing defense swimmers, use of throw-bags and boat operations.

The three day training is set to end Wednesday evening.
