TEMPLE, TX — One person died and another was critically injured after a crash on I-35 in Temple this morning.

Police say a sedan lost control and was hit by an 18-wheeler.

"The initial investigation indicates that a sedan lost control and was struck by an 18-wheeler. A female passenger was deceased on scene," said officials. "She has been identified as 28-year-old Erica McCrary. Her next of kin have been notified."

The male driver was taken to Baylor Scott & White in Temple with life-threatening injuries, said police. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.

Temple police's Accident Reconstruction unit are still on scene investigating the accident.

Earlier, officials announced they were shutting down southbound I-35 and diverting traffic to the service road after a crash involving an 18-wheeler and at least one other vehicle.

The crash occurred around 5 a.m. at Spur 290 near Mile Marker 301 in Bell County.

The Nugent Avenue bridge over I-35 is also blocked off.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes at this time.
