Affidavit: Child calls police scared after mother doesn't return home from drinking, playing cards with friends

KILLEEN, TX — A woman was arrested after she left her two children alone to go to a friend's house to drink and play cards.

According to the arrest affidavit, Lydia Gonzalez left her 7-year-old and 4-year-old alone. Her 7-year-old became scared and called police.

When police arrived at the house at 5 a.m. on Dec. 15, the child said their mother left them alone at 9 p.m. the previous night and had not returned home. Police said they saw text messages and attempted phone calls that the child tried to make to reach their mother.

Gonzales told her daughter she was on her way home, but never arrived.

Officer said that they saw a kitchen knife within reach, dog feces, dog urine and garbage on the floor.

While the officers were with the girls, they received a text from Gonzalez saying she was on her way home. Gonzalez was arrested for a traffic violation and transported to the Killeen City Jail.

Gonzalez told police that she has gone out to a friend's house and was drinking. She said she had fallen asleep and returned home that morning.

She offered no explanation on why she left the children alone, and she said she had done it before.

She was arrested for abandoning a child with the intent to return.
