MEXIA, TX — A new Facebook group in Central Texas is connecting local high school seniors with community members who want them to know, they're special.

Mexia High School Senior Alysa Carrizales is known for her music and love of the outdoors.

"I plan to attend Sam Houston State University and study environmental science. I'd eventually like to become a national park ranger," said Alysa.

However, now she and the Class of 2020 will be remembered for their perseverance through the pandemic too.

"I want people to remember that we stuck through it. My classmates are working hard. A lot of our teachers have been patient. I would hope people would empathize with us you know," said Alysa.

Yuly Hernandez wanted to do something special for high school seniors and created the Adopt-A-Senior Texas Suburbs Edition Facebook group after being invited to a similar page in another part of the country.

She adopted Alysa and sent her flowers too.

"It was really such a beautiful thing that somebody cared enough to not only start this but participate in it and get so many people to participate in it as well. It warmed my heart," said Alysa.

Hundreds of seniors have been posted by their parents for virtual adoption. The sponsors are encouraged to send cards, notes, care packages and just let seniors know the community cares.

Yuly hopes the encouragement will spread not only in Central Texas but beyond.
