VALLEY MILLS, Texas — “She has a nice attitude every day and she’s like really nice," 10-year-old Addy Bradshaw said.
Addy and Khiley Bradshaw are local shoppers at the only donut and kolache shop in Valley Mills. They look forward to getting their favorite thing on the menu a few times a week.
Handling orders for customers is easy, but owner Venetti Or told me her clientele doesn't see the hard work and late nights she puts in—and she does it all with a smile.
“It’s a lot of work and a lot of trying. It’s seven days a week. We work at 2 a.m. and seven days a week and we close at 1 p.m. Sometimes we get a chance to go home and take a nap but sometimes we have to go all the way to Dallas or Austin to get some supplies that we can’t order in," Or said.
Although the hours may be demanding, Addy and Khiley rely on convenience to get their tasty sugar rush and satisfying breakfast meal.
“It’s just easier to come here and get instead of like going somewhere else and it’s a lot quicker to come here and get stuff and just go," Khiley said.
“We get a lot of support from the customers that come along Highway 6 and people in Valley Mills," Or said.
Business veteran Reuben Jacoway has had his antique store for over 20 years. He told me it’s not about making tons of money.
“Anything we make pays utilities and taxes and any profit we make goes back in buying more material and more antiques for sale," Jacoway said.
Instead, it’s about living out a dream. A dream his wife had for years.
“It’s a real joy to her whenever she makes a sale and it’s gonna go up in somebody’s house," Jacoway said.
