ALPINE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team took control of the game in the second quarter and rolled to a 71-46 victory over Sul Ross State Saturday in Alpine. The 7th-ranked Cru is now 19-1 overall and 11-0 in American Southwest Conference play. UMHB needs just one more win to clinch at least a share of the ASC West Division title. The Lobos fall to 5-15 overall and 3-8 in ASC play with the loss.
The Cru never trailed in the contest, opening with a 6-1 run and building a 25-19 lead at the end of the first period. UMHB held the Lobos to just eight second-quarter points and used a 12-2 run to open the period to make it a 16-point lead. It would stay a 16-point advantage into halftime. The Cru led by as many as 24 points early in the third quarter and never allowed Sul Ross to get closer than the 16-point halftime edge in the second half.
Hannah Holt led the way for UMHB with 15 points. Allaira Jones and Aubrie Elliott added nine points apiece as 12 different players scored for the Cru. Madison McCoy and Kendall Rollins had seven rebounds and four assists apiece. UMHB shot 41 percent from the field as a team and went 14-20 from the free-throw line. The Cru also out rebounded the Lobos 45-34 in the game.
Chandre Nunez led Sul Ross with 14 points and Kayley Diaz added 10 more. The Lobos shot just 27 percent from the floor for the game and only hit 2-17 three-pointers on the day.
UMHB will close out its five-game road trip with games at McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons University next week in Abilene. The Cru will then close out the regular season with three straight home games at the Mayborn Campus Center.
