Police released the name of the man who shot himself when officers approached him for questioning on Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, 21-year-old Jacob Cadena was identified by authorities on Wednesday.

Belton spokesman Paul Romer said a patrol officer recognized the man as a suspect in a domestic aggravated assault walking on Second Avenue.

Romer said the assault happened over the weekend.

At around 11:51 a.m., an officer called another officer and a detective for assistance. The man was walking near the 700 block of 2nd Avenue. Police believe the man was armed and refused repeated requests to stop and talk about the weekend incident.

Police continued to follow the man on foot, and another Belton detective unit pulled in front of the man in the 500 block of 2nd Avenue, in front of the Bell County Annex parking lot.

The man walked across the street while reaching into his waistband.

When officers approached him, he shot himself in the head.

Romer said the detective attempted to disarm him causing a brief struggle before the gun went off.

No officers discharged their weapons.

Emergency responders were on scene performing CPR on the man, but were unsuccessful in reviving him.

He was declared dead at the scene.

A small portion of 2nd Avenue is closed in front of the Bell County Courthouse Annex.
