Having more guests over for Thanksgiving could lead to trouble with your pipes.

Tyler Staas is the construction estimator for Mike Staas Services in Waco.

He said most your sewer lines are used to having two or four people using them, not more than 10 at a time.

To avoid having to call a plumber out this Thursday, don't push all your scraps down the garbage disposal.

"We are extremely busy during the holidays," Staas said. "When you get a bunch of people in the kitchen, you're just talking and no thinking, just throwing everything down that drain thinking it's just going to go away."

Staas said the grease and extra food could clog up your pipes, leading to a costly visit.

"Anything after hours, anything on holidays, you always run into overtime and holiday pay which could possibly double the price of a normal call," Staas said. "You could look at hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on how bad it actually is."

You'll also want your guests to wait for 10 to 15 minutes between showers to allow drains to completely clear. You should also cover your pipes if the temperature drops to below freezing.
