The McLennan Community College received over $40,000 from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). The grant will provide funding to the College Readiness and Success Models Initiative.
MCC does not have a separate department for developmental education but with this grant, the initiative is designed to transition into a corequisite model of developmental education for Mathematics and Integrated Reading and Writing (INRW) classes.
MCC will also be able to appoint leaders within the two departments to hold meetings and develop common curriculum to use moving forward.
The goal for the initiatives’ first year is to achieve 30 percent of students with developmental educational needs to complete a corequisite section rather than separate INRW and math courses. In 2019-2020, the goal is to increase to 75 percent completion of the corequisite course.
MCC does not currently require direct engagement between developmental students with the College’s Center for Academic Excellence (CAE). With this new grant, engagement is expected to be provided and MCC is hoping for students to complete their developmental education sequence at a higher rate due to the increased options in academic support.
“MCC’s recent history with students who have developmental educational needs has been very positive, and we are excited to build on our strength in this area with the help of the CRSM grant from the THECB,” Chad Eggleston, Dean of Arts and Sciences said. “We are poised to do great things for our students with the new corequisite model.”
