National Night Out kicked off today at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco.

People from across the state showed up for the event that was hosted by the Waco Police Department, the City of Waco and Texas Crime Prevention.

They heard from the mayor, law enforcement and other officials who stressed the importance of National Night Out.

Speakers explained how the event enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. It also provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances

"You get to mingle with each other, you get to talk with each other and ask officers any questions that you may have," said Waco Police Ofc. Sofie Martinez. "At the same time, officers get to speak with people who live within the community and listen to their concerns or just anything they may have to let us know about."

National Night Out is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. You can join the Waco Police Department for its celebration on Oct. 2.
