As Central Texas nears the more miserable part of the summer heat, the Salvation Army in Waco has opened a cooling station for those needing a break from the triple-digit heat.

The Salvation Army operates its cooling center at the Community Kitchen facility located at 300 Webster Avenue in downtown Waco. The downtown center also offers hungry individuals a free meal.

"Our Community Kitchen will continue serving breakfast and dinner 365 days a year, as we always do. On those days when the temperature exceeds 100 degrees, the center will remain open until 4:30 p.m., closing shortly for cleaning as they prepare to reopen for dinner," Major James Taylor, The Salvation Army Corps Officer said. "Water, snacks and a place of respite will be available for anyone seeking salvation from the heat. We welcome all to chill out with us. We also welcome the community to support these efforts with donations of water, snacks or monetary contributions."

The center also serves as a heating center during the winter months.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website, heat stress is a term to identify a range of conditions from heat rash, heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided. Air conditioning is the strongest protective factor against heat-related illness. Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours a day can reduce the risk of a heat-related illness.

There are certain groups of people who are at high risk for experiencing a heat-related illness. For those who are homeless, living in poverty and unable to afford air conditioning, the heat can not only be miserable, but deadly.

The Salvation Army opens its doors for anyone needing salvation from the heat. They said they welcome all with an open door and open heart.
